Week 3: What is important on the first day of school?
In the Wong textbook, the Wong's speak to the fact that its important for the teacher to display certain things before students reach classroom, in the classroom and on the students way out. For example, it will make the students more at ease if your "your name, room number, section or period, if appropriate, grade level or subject, an appropriate welcome or greeting" (Wong 106). This way they are not looking for your classroom, they know they are in the right room and they can already start associating name and class. In the Jones textbook, it spoke more to how the students pick up on certain ques and lessons in our class even before the bell rings. For instance, Jones brings up that if you have a few minutes before class and a student walks in then you are telling that student "you may enter my class however you wish" (Jones 134). The student is already gauging what is allowed and now allowed even before class starts. This compared with the videos because the first grader was fully prepared with supplies, etc and then in the classroom the teacher had name tags already set out, desk labeled and cubbies so the children's bags were out of the way. This type of organization helped with the first day of first grade. Jones and Wong really spoke to how the highschooler in the second video was discussing what needs he had before going to school. One that really rang out was knowing which room to go to. This is a big deal for students and up to the teacher to eliminate it.
Teacher Perspective: It is my job to ensure an environment in my classroom that is conducive with learning. It is my job to set up routines and rituals for the students so they know what is expected of them and how to operate in my classroom. It is my job to establish these things even before the year, the bell or the class begins. It is my job to make the place inviting and welcoming and easy to navigate so desk, seats, materials, textbook placement all go into play. It is my job to create a relationship with the Parents and student so we can all work together to have quality education.
Student Perspective: It is my job as a student to ensure that I follow the rules of the teacher. It is my job to respect them.It is my job to work with my parents and my teachers on what they instruct me so I can do my best and go beyond school. It is also my job to find out what is expected of me. I can only do this if I have a teacher that is organized, forthcoming, and has great follow through. It is very frustrating for me if my teacher does not have these habits because than I am lost on what to do or I try to manipulate the situation to get what I want if certain measures are not in place. Why try if the teacher is not?
Parent Perspective: It is my job as a Parent to ensure my child is getting quality education. It is my job to make sure the teacher who's class they will be in is highly qualified and willing to work with my child to have a great education. It is my job to create a relationship with the teacher to ensure that my students education needs are being met. I want a teacher who is organized, educated in their field of teaching, and truly cares about my child.
