Comparing Management/Discipline Style
Summary One: Fred Jones "Teaching Tools" Fred Jones' book, Teaching Tools, includes steps for the every day teacher to help bring down student disruptions, alleviate backtalk, and stop helpless hand raising and day dreaming while helping teachers motivate students to have responsible behavior, motivation and overall independent learning. The best part about Fred Jones is that he relates the information in laymen terms and does not use a lot of educational jargon. He is able to relay his philosophy of best practices and real life situations with every day language that truly makes sense.
Summary Two: Harry and Rosemary Wong "The First Days of School"
The Wong's philosophy is a combination of disciplines that if put in place on the first day of school will ensure a smooth rest of the year. It is about cooperation with fellow teachers, administration, parents and students in order to have an all around support system in place for a positive and successful learning environment. It is about putting the students first by seeking all avenues for continued education, collaboration and learning the students behavior.
Summary Three: Carol A Tomlinson "How to Differentiate Instruction in Mixed-Ability Classrooms"
Tomlinson's philosophy speaks to incorporating lesson plans, classroom management techniques, and learning to be comfortable with student differences in order to teach a mixed-ability classroom. Tomlinson believes in reaching each student in the classroom and not just one type of student because all students learn in different ways. This is practical implementation of this philosophy in order to achieve a direct instruction plan for differentiated classroom.
Summary Four: Love and Logic
Love and logic speaks to teaching from each of those angles. First from love in that each statement, thought, and action is done out of love for the student, parent and profession. It is using logical techniques in order to come to conclusions that best fit the outcome of the situation for student, teacher and parent. It is giving the student (child) choices and loving them through the choice but setting them up for success by giving them logical choices to choose from.
Text to Text: The two text that align with my management philosophy are Jones' and Wong. Jones uses the best practices of professionals who were successful in their techniques I believe my management style is a mixture of the best before me and those I will meet. Wong aligns with my management style by being very rigid and direct in how discipline is given. It is all about setting up the classroom for the least amount of distractions. These text compare well to my style because they incorporate both of these measures.
Text to Self: I will use the readings from Love and Logic to enhance my classroom management style into a more thoughtful and student led management. I do not want to micro manage or be militant so I believe that Love and Logic will help me gain new insights on improving my style that aligns with Wong and Jones as of right now.
Text to World: I believe that I can use my management style in my home with my own children in order to better prepare them for the school career. I believe I can use this in my church ministry among the administration there so that we can build an effective kingdom for God.
