Week Five:
Text to Text: It intrigued me that Tomlinson and Jones were speaking to the same thing but had two different strategies to get there. Even with these two educators, excellent in their craft, had two different views on building motivation and interest in the classroom. The underlying commonality was that the students had to have the want to in order to succeed in true learning. My take away was that we must foster an environment that breeds that type of learning. How do we do that? Tomlison leaned towards intrinsic motivators and Jones towards extrinsic motivators. This reminds me of the book FISH. The books speaks to the type of attitude we bring into the workplace and our lives. It makes the difference what our outlook is when we approach something. It will be that; which brings our students from recalling information to learning information.
Text to World: These text touch deeply with our main issue today in all schools. The fact that the student has to have the want to learn. The rapid technology, the "give me" search engines available for students, give an out that students do not have to learn it, when its readily available to them at one click. The fact that Google is known for being the most used search engine speaks volumes, especially when its average user is between 13-17 years of age according to Time magazines. It is the world that is changing our students outlook on learning. Its our job to use the information in the world to effect our students in a positive way to enhance, entice and enrich their learning desire.
Text to Self: Jones stated the different types of motivators - who knew there were so many? This brings to mind the classroom this week. I had to use several types of motivators to get the students interested in learning about a new country and doing a project with it. I had to use a extrinsic motivators of "if you get this one day early, I will give you 5 extra points." I also had to tell them good job and that's a good idea, these were intrinsic motivators that made them bring more ideas to me. But, I believe after reading these text that it has to be more than just those two motivators to really get them to be excited about learning that new country or project. I need to use those this week and see the difference.
