Professional development
Summary of Wong:
Wong expresses the importance of being a professional and seeking knowledge to better oneself in the professional world. He states that "knowledge provides options" and "options give the power of choice" (Wong 298). Wong states that the key to becoming a professional educator includes "join[ing] or organ[izing] a support group" and "participate[ing] in conferences" (Wong 300). One of the ways an educator can become more professional is by listening to others with "read[ing] literature" and "watch[ing] videos" to educate onself (Wong 301). One of the best ways that Wong mentions to be a professional educator is to "observe effective teachers" (Wong 302). By doing this an educator can go from existing in school to being a professional in school. Reap rewards by implementing a plan that is develop by self and share that plan with others. Take the risk. (Wong 308-310).
Summary of region10.org
The Region 10 website has a great professional development website. It has website tabs that include a software program that is an "online learning center". Within this tab on the website is programs for student teachers, new teachers, and for longer term teachers as well. There is a section with continuing education credits. The user can select to use all three software programs or the one that only pertains to their interest of study. The great thing is that it is all in one central place. As well the website includes places to find a job and further the professionals career through several different programs and services right within the website.
Summary of loc.gov
The professional development tab on the loc.gov the user has four different options of how they would like to learn. The user can choose to do the continuing credits through "facilitate ready to present" software which is great for headmasters or principals or churches who would like to show to groups. This enables the facilitator to receive the information and share it with a large group. The school could show on an in service day or promote as a workshop. The second way is through a "self-directed module" which is at the users pace and can be taken online through loc.gove as well. This is for the professional who would like to continue education on their own time. The third option is have a staff member of the Library of Congress come and teach to a small group and give the necessary resources over a period of time; showing a series of education. The final option is work directly with the Library of Congress partners such as those who host the workshops, carry the materials or hold conferences in the area of choice.
Summary of apte.org
On the apte.org website the professional development tab includes several ways to continue education. The first way is through CPE units that are provided by apte.org as free online modules. The second way is through a book club- which includes where the educator learn on their own and then learns from others in the club as well. Its a study group per se. There is also a personal, self-pace independent study where one can take the courses on their own time. The last way is through videos where the educator watches a series of videos and than prints out the professional certificate after completion.
Summary of Website #1
This website is for history educators to get continuous education. The website includes historian pod cast from the leading, most relevant historians. This allows history teachers to stay up to date on the lastest historians doctrine of current and past history. The next program that he website includes is the online exhibitions which looks into era's such as the civil war, American wars and freedom wars of history and allows the teacher to go through a simulation of the wars. The neatest part of the website is that one of the ways to continue education is the History Era part of the website where educators who specialize in history can read essays from leading historians.
Summary of Website #2
This website is the National Council for History Education and the this websites professional development tab includes custom continuing education depending on what agency is requesting the information. The website includes information related to how their program can work for each agency. For example the website states that the program is a "colloquia [that] are led by a three-person team that includes an academic historian, a master classroom teacher, and a learning/curriculum specialist". This team comes in and present the information to the agency of choice - a school, a school district, a church or a private school and then customizes the information based on the agencies need.
The new insights that I have gained are the fact that there are a lot of resources available for the teachers who are willing to continue their education. The problem is not a lack of resources but the lack of willingness to learn. I learned that the programs out there give several different options of how to accept the information and most of them are free of charge. There should be no excuse as a teacher to better oneself for the sake of staying relevant, current and educated for their students.
